Rudolph John ‘Rudy’ Grothouse, 86, of Delphos, passed away Tuesday, September 14, 2021, at CHP Inpatient Hospice Center in Defiance.
He was born January 25, 1935 in Ottoville to Albert and Hildagarde (Martin) Grothouse, who both preceded him in death. On December 28, 1957 he married Judith (Reddington) Grothouse, who preceded him in death on February 23, 2018.
Rudy is survived by two sons, Charles ‘Chuck’ (Cindy) Grothouse and James ‘Buge’ (Cathie) Grothouse, both of Delphos; four daughters, Laura ‘Cork’ (Jay) Ulm of Delphos, Cheryl ‘Sis’ (Don) Ditto of Delphos and Lynn (Joel) Brentlinger of Nashville, Tennessee; Patsy Denny of Ft. Wayne, IN; two sisters, Agnes Miller and Dolores ‘Dolly’ Honigford, both of Delphos; a sister-in-law, Carol Grothouse of Delphos; and thirteen grandchildren, Nichole (Brad) Rode, Katie (Cameron) Hermiller, Courtney (James) Kirk, Ashley (Aaron) Etzkorn, Wes Ulm, Chris (Meghan) Ulm, Andrew Grothouse, Emilee Grothouse, Michael Butler, Nickolas Ditto, Nathan Ditto, Kellen Schomaeker and Abby Brentlinger; and great-grandchildren, Evan, Brooklyn, Jordan and Gwen Rode, Chase and Kohen Hermiller, Callan Kirk, Emmitt and Kara Etzkorn, and Ledger Ulm.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia 'Cindy' Grothouse; two brothers, Richard and Ronald Grothouse; and two brothers-in-law, Tom Miller and Richard Honigford.
Rudy was a 1954 graduate of Delphos St. John’s, being a basketball player through his high school years. He served as a SP-3(T) in the United States Army and Reserves from 1956-1962. He was a plumber and pipe fitter, retiring from General Dynamics Lima Plant. Rudy was a longtime Delphos businesman, starting Grothouse Plumbing and Heating in 1970. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. He was a lifetime member of the Delphos Eagles, American Legion VFW. He was a member of the Delphos City Council as a 3rd Ward Councilman from 1958-1963. Rudy was strong in his faith; a quiet, honest and hardworking man.
A Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 17 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Military honors will be conducted by Delphos Veterans Council following the service at the church. A private burial will be held at a later date in St. John's Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. on Thursday, September 16 at Weber Funeral Home, 1840 E. Fifth St., Delphos, where a Parish Wake Service will be held at 7:45 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s School. Online condolences may be shared at www.weberfh.net.
