Obituary

OTTOVILLE - Joseph W. Horstman, 88, of Ottoville, passed away 11:41 a.m. Thursday, August 3, 2023, at the Putnam County Ambulatory Care.

He was born February 6, 1935, in Allen County to Cyril “Shrimp” and Evelyn (Seymour) Horstman. On June 24, 1961, he married the love of his life Sharon Shaw and she survives in Ottoville.

Joe is also survived by four children, Steven (Dan Fischer) Horstman of Delphos, Rick (Carol) Horstman of Kalida, Christy (Dean) Schwinnen of Delphos and Brad (Jen) Horstman of Kalida; his siblings, sister, RuthAnn “Sis” (Tom) Schimmoeller of Delphos and his brother, John (Susan) Horstman of Ottoville, in-laws, Pam (Mike) Van Schoyck of Venice, Florida. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, Cassie (Brady) Hermiller, Jordan (Dylan) Klima, Riley Horstman, Brandi Merschman, Devin Merschman, Lydia (Ryan) Fischer, Nolan Schwinnen, Jayce Horstman, Joel Horstman and Jax Horstman; and a great grandchild, Bowen Hermiller.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents, and a grandson, Curtis Schwinnen.

Mr. Horstman was a 1953 graduate of Ottoville High School, and of Northwestern Business College – now UNOH.   He served honorably in the US Army in Germany from 1957 – 1959.

Joe was employed with Sara Lee Foods for over 40 years having been the top National Salesman in the country ten years in a row!  He was owner of two restaurants in Montpelier and Wauseon.

Joe was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where he was a member of the church choir.  He was a member of the Ottoville VFW Post 3740. He was an active member of the Delphos Country Club where he served as President from 1973 – 1974 when the new “9” was formed. He was extremely proud of that accomplishment! After 50 years of golfing, Joe scored his first hole in one with his son as a witness, on October 6, 2022, at hole 11 at Moose Landing.

Joe was a die-hard Cleveland “Indians” fan, a great fan of the Cleveland Browns and loved anything OSU. He especially loved watching his grandkids participate in sports.  He was so proud of his over 60 years spent assisting and helping coach boys’ basketball at Kalida and Ottoville. More than anything, he loved coaching with his friend (the all-time OHSAA leader for boys’ basketball wins) for the last 50 years at Kalida High School!
