Byron ‘Barney’ E. Altman, 88, of Delphos, passed away Monday morning, January 1, 2024, at Vancrest of Delphos.

He was born January 19, 1935, in Delphos, to Matthew Aaron and Valeria (Thines) Altman, who both preceded him in death. On August 17, 1957, he married Jane M. O’Neill, who preceded him in death December 26, 2021. Barney and Jane were sweethearts since sixth grade, and had been married for 66 years.

Barney is survived by three sons, Dan (Rhonda) Altman and Tim (Stephanie) Altman, both of Delphos, and Michael Altman of Middletown; two daughters, Sue (Todd) Miller of Spring Hill, FL, and Becky Sassatelli of Sebring, FL; two sisters, Marcia Prindle of Bronson, MI and Ginger Tierney of Gomer; seven grandchildren, Brandon (Jen) Altman, Jamie (Steve) Wiechart, Katrina (Michael) Kill, Melina (Ian) Wetherall, Jonathan Sassatelli, Tyler Miller and Katelyn Sassatelli; four great-grandchildren, Riley Wiechart, Jackson Wiechart, Evelyn Kill and Rylin Wetherall.

He was also preceded in death by a two brothers, Joseph and David Altman; and two sisters, Barbara Link and Ida Jeanine Ulrich.

Barney was a 1954 graduate of Delphos St. John’s and was an avid Blue Jay fan. He went to Bowling Green State University for two years, on a basketball scholarship. Barney served in the United States Army from 1957-1959. He was a sergeant on the Delphos Police Department for 27 years. In 2013, he was inducted into the St. John’s Hall of Fame for arts/athletic achievement. He had a high school basketball career scoring record of 1202 points. Barney coached 7th and 8th grade boys basketball at Delphos St. John’s for 22 years, and then was assistant coach under Bob Arnzen for four years. He also spent a lot of time at Stadium Park playing/umpiring men’s softball and coaching youth baseball.

The Altman family would like to thank the extended care givers for all your love and attention.

A Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 5 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with graveside military rites conducted by The Delphos Veterans Council following the mass.  Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 4 at Weber Funeral Home, 1840 E. Fifth St., Delphos, where a Parish Wake Service will be held at 7:45 p.m.  Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Locker Room Renovation Capital Improvement or to a charity of the donor’s choice.  Online condolences may be shared at www.weberfh.net.
