Sharyl E. Odenweller

Sharyl E. Odenweller, 77, of Delphos, passed away Saturday, October 21, 2023 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born August 17, 1946, in Huntington, Indiana to Raymond R. and E. Joan (Biberstine) Schwartz, who both preceded her in death. On November 29, 1968, she married the love her life, Terry L. Odenweller, who survives.

Sharyl is survived by her daughters, Joy (Jeffrey) Hays of Spencerville and Trisha (Gregory) Klausing of Kalida; sisters, Colleen Schwartz of Hopewell, NJ, Dr. Rhonda (Dr. Charles Moretti) Schwartz of Northfield, MN and Romaine (Clifford) Taylor of Lakeland, FL; grandchildren, Jacob (Madison) Hays, Alexandra Hays, Leah Hays, Joshua (fiance’ Madison Casey) Klausing, Tyler Klausing and Ryan Klausing. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Dr. Donald Whitney; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Michael (Janice) Odenweller, James (Deborah) Odenweller and Barbara (Michael) Miller; Biberstine and Schwartz cousins, beloved nieces and nephews, and many special friends and neighbors.

She was also preceded in death by her in-laws, Vincent and Dorothy Odenweller; and sister-in-law, Sharon Whitney.

Sharyl was a 1964 graduate of Van Wert High School and a 1968 graduate of Western Kentucky University. She had been a teacher at Lincoln Junior High, Van Wert and Delphos St. John’s High Schools. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, where she was active in various ministries over the years. She was a long-time active member of the Holy Spirit Prayer Group, was a member of the Secular Franciscan Order, and Partners in Christ for Chimbote Mission. For many years, Sharyl was on the committee and volunteered for Delphos Community Christmas Project. She especially loved family activities, and cherished being a part of her grandchildren’s lives. Special activities that the grandchildren treasured were, going on “mystery trips” that usually included visiting the Basilica at Carey and always included an ice cream stop, an annual Nativity play complete with homemade costumes, going to her house after school and being treated to protein bars and egg sandwiches, having help with homework and proofreading papers (even through college), and playing computer games at her house. Other grandchildren’s memories included hunting for hidden candy canes at Christmas, watching Veggie Tales, and making cut out cookies with her recipe (which is still used today). She always made everyone feel welcome and took immense interest in their activities.

A Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2:00-7:00 Friday, October 27, 2023 at Weber Funeral Home, 1840 E. Fifth St., Delphos, where a Parish Wake Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. The family would like to thank everyone for their prayers, meals and cards, her “6 Mile Sister” for all their love and support, and the staff of Mercy Health St. Rita’s Cancer Center and Hospice for the wonderful care they gave her.
