Joan Celeste Deters Metzner

It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of Joan Celeste Deters Metzner (age 93), who left this world peacefully on December 13, 2024 at 6:03 p.m. A devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, she lived a life full of faith, love, and deep commitment to family.

Born on April 8, 1931 in Cincinnati, Joan enjoyed being the oldest sister to Paul (Jeanne) Deters of Lexington, KY and Don (Nancy) Deters of Cincinnati.

She married John August Metzner Jr. on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1952. They were married for 65 years and were blessed with ten children.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband, her brother, Don, and four daughters, Celeste (Keith) Bushnell, Marian 'Sis', Mary Jo, and Mary Catherine ‘Casey’.

She is survived by six children, John ‘Jay’ III (Deb Oney), Paula Dinkins (Gary Gudakunst), Joseph Timothy ‘Tim’ (Barb), Ann (Maurice) Chung, Michael (Cyndie), Julia (Dan) Dalton, and a bonus son, Michael ‘Chet’ (Susan) Klaus.

Her legacy continues in the form of many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who have all been deeply touched by her love.

Joan’s Catholic faith was the cornerstone of her life. She believed deeply in the power of prayer and found solace, guidance, and strength through praying the Rosary daily and attending mass at Delphos St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church whenever her health would allow.

Her 93+ years of life were filled with loving her family and friends, playing and hosting her pinochle group during the winter months, and spending summers at the Delphos pool. She cared for the elderly for over forty years as a registered nurse, having worked in the various Delphos nursing homes.

Joan was renowned for her love of cooking and baking, effortlessly feeding a crowd with her famous spaghetti dinners and Wednesday family nights. In her later years, she could be found in her favorite corner chair immersed in her beloved books or listening to Blue Jay sports on the radio.

Throughout her long life, she inspired all who knew her, reminding us of the importance of family, faith, and friends. Though she will be deeply missed, her memory lives on in the stories, lessons, and love that she has left behind. We take comfort in knowing that her spirit is now at peace, reunited with those who passed before her. Joan’s legacy will endure through the generations she leaves behind.

A funeral mass will begin at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 20, 2024 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos. The funeral will be live streamed on St. John’s Parish website. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. A celebration of her life will follow at Delphos K of C.
