Edward J. Zalar

Edward J. Zalar, 85, of Delphos, passed away Wednesday morning, March 7, 2018 at his home. His Family.... Ed was born September 12, 1932 in Barberton to the late John and Marijana (Zupic) Zalar. On August 9, 1958 he married Norma (Phillips) Zalar, who preceded him in death on December 18, 2017. He is survived by three sons, Dr. Michael (Donna) Zalar of Olmsted Township, David Zalar of Delphos and Cmdr. John (Cindy) Zalar, U.S.N. of Gulf Breeze, Florida; three daughters, Teresa (Steve) Schmiedebusch of Ottawa, Mary Ann Bailey of Delphos and Beth (Dave) Justus of Huron; 20 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; and 2 step-great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a sister and six brothers. His Legacy.... Ed was a 1956 graduate of Michigan State University. While there, he lettered in football for the Spartans and played on Big Ten and Rose Bowl Championship teams in 1954 and 1956. Ed coached football and basketball at Delphos St. John's High School from 1961 until 1968, where he also taught world history. He then became the Director of Parolees Rehabilitation and Employment Program thru Goodwill Industries. After which he went to work for the Allen County Sheriff's Office holding position in the office, retiring in 1992. Ed was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1362, St. Vincent DePaul Society, Fraternal Order of Police and the Third Order of Secular Franciscans His Farewell Services.... Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 12 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Rev. Daniel Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m. on Sunday, March 11 at Weber Funeral Home, 1840 E. Fifth St., Delphos, where a Knights of Columbus rosary service will begin at 5:45 p.m., followed by a Parish Wake Service. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Parish Foundation.
