Dorothy R. Hohlbein, 86, Delphos, passed away the evening of Friday, December 2, 2022 at Vancrest Nursing Home.
She was born May 30, 1936 in Delphos to the late Arthur and Helen (Gerdeman) Haunhorst. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, John Hohlbein, whom she married on May 30, 1956.
She is survived by her children: Lenny Hohlbein (Paula) of Fulton, KY, Mark Hohlbein (Rebecca) of Johnstown, Bonnie Hohlbein of Worthington, Pete Hohlbein (Patty) of Worthington and Paul Hohlbein (Lisa) of Minster. She was affectionately known as Nanny by her grandchildren: Lacy, Chloe (Bailey), Lane, Chris (Nicole), Aaron, Kasey, Basima, Ian (Lydia), Adam (Emily), Alex (Elizabeth), Allie (Michael Wenig); and great-grandchildren, Clara, Myron, Millie Hohlbein, Henry Hohlbein and Graham Wenig.
She was loved dearly by so many and will be missed by special friends Karen & Ron Bonifas, Becky & Mike Berelsman and Julie and Jeff Rode.
Dorothy is survived by three sisters and a brother: Irma Hilvers of Delphos, Carol (Don Krietemeyer) of Ft. Jennings, Sharon Doyle of Worthington and Gene (Linda) Haunhorst of Delphos; sister-in-law, Barb Hohlbein of Toledo and brother-in-law, Virgil (Nancy) Hohlbein of Ottoville.
Dorothy deeply loved all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was blessed to be able to hold all of them in her arms.
Dorothy and John also hosted exchange students, who became family: Nicole Jongen (The Netherlands) and Susan Pollmeier (Germany).
She was preceded in death by grandchildren: Emily, Ashley and Kyler Hohlbein; sibling, Alice Dermer; in-laws, Barney Dermer, Al Hilvers, Alma (Otto) Schnipke, Eugene Hohlbein (Catherine), Oscar Hohlbein (Annie and Sarah), Ralph Hohlbein and Joann Hohlbein.
Dorothy graduated from Delphos St. John’s High School and was a lifelong member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. She was a professional seamstress for Drapery Stitch and retired from there after many years.
Dorothy and John enjoyed traveling frequently to see their kids, grandkids and exchange students (in The Netherlands and Germany), and in more recent years her great-grandchildren.
She was a second Mom and Nanny to neighbors, caregivers and many of her kids’ friends, and was affectionately called Dort by them. Dorothy was always up for an adventure (riding in a floating car), card playing, playing games with her grandchildren, golf cart rides, family reunions or sitting on the porch visiting; she never knew a stranger and would make everyone feel welcome. She was a master pie baker and famous for her delicious beef and noodles, along with chicken and beef sandwiches. Lots of memories, laughing and fun were made over those meals.
She set many life examples, most notably through her faith in God and being a strong prayer warrior, praying daily for all her family and friends. She lived her faith outwardly through her service to others including volunteering at the Thrift Shop, caregiver to her Aunt Flossie, being a Reading Buddy at Franklin Elementary school, a Den Mother for Cub Scouts (creating an elaborate scavenger hunt on the farm for all the kids) and creating amazing vacation experiences for her family (Virginia Beach, going out West, traveling around Lake Michigan and the Dakotas to name a few).
