Virgil Frederick German, 92, of Delphos, passed away Sunday evening, September 23, 2018, at The Meadows of Delphos. Virgil was born January 25, 1926 in Delphos to the late Sylvester and Eleanor (Goergens) German. On September 8, 1951 he married Mary J. (Heitz) German who preceded him in death on June 12, 2013. He is survived by a son, Thomas (Ginny) German of Elida; two daughters, Ann (Jim) Benfield and Sue Smith, both of Delphos; six grandchildren, Ken (Kristine) Keirns of Tampa, Florida, Chad A. (Kendra) German of Graytown, Chris (Kristina) Smith of St. Marys, Julie (Jim) Wagner of Delphos, Jane Keirns of Delphos, and Jeff Smith of Delphos; four step-grandchildren, Cynthia (Jay) Newcomb of Riverview, Michigan, Renee Tarp of Waterford, Michigan, Robert (Christie) Kemper of Kettering, and Michelle (Greg) Stiffey of Lima; eight great-grandchildren with one on the way; one great-great-grandchild on the way; and three step-great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a sister and her husband, Donald and Betty Dobner; a step-great-grandchild Brent Benfield; and a nephew, Neal Dobner. Virgil was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a WWII Navy Veteran. He was a retired rural letter carrier, and for over 42 years was the owner/operator of German Shell Service Station. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. He held membership with the K of C, VFW, St. John's Athletic Boosters and the American Bowling Conference (ABC). Virgil was an avid Blue Jay, Cleveland Browns, Ohio State Buckeye, and Cincinnati Reds fan. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 28 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery with graveside services accorded by the Delphos Veterans Council. Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday and from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Friday at Weber Funeral Home, 1840 E. Fifth St., Delphos, where a K of C service will be held at 7:30 p.m., followed by a Parish Wake Service. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Health Professionals Hospice of Delphos, St. John's Athletic Boosters, or St. John's Tuition Fund.
