Edwin Holdgreve Obituary

Edwin C. ‘Ed' Holdgreve, age 78, of Delphos, passed away Monday, December 31, 2018 at Vancrest of Delphos. He was born May 27, 1940 in Ft. Jennings, to the late Raymond and Helen (Calvelage) Holdgreve. On September 11, 1965, he married Marilyn (Sroufe) Holdgreve, who preceded in death on June 13, 2018. He is survived by a son, Randy (Amy) Holdgreve of Delphos; a daughter, Ann (Darren) Closson of Grand Rapids, Michigan; two grandsons, Gavin and Grady Holdgreve, both of Delphos; Zack Benner of Nashville, Tennessee, who they had a special relationship with and helped raise; a brother, Don (Lynnette) Holdgreve of Van Wert; two sisters, Mary Jane Osting of Delphos, and Eileen (Howard) Klaus of Venedocia; a sister-in-law, Kathy Holdgreve of Delphos; and in-laws, Gary (Louise) Sroufe of Delphos, Paul ‘Nub' (Kay) Sroufe of Powell, Kathy (Jim) Watson of Plymouth, Michigan, and Carol Spring of Delphos. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Jim Holdgreve; a brother-in-law, Tom Osting; and in-laws, Linda and Dennis Stemen and Terry Spring. Ed drove a fuel truck for Community Oil and then Orville Neidert for over 32 years. He also drove school bus for 36 years. He was in the United States Army Reserves for six years. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Ed was completely immersed in the Delphos Little League for over 38 years. In that time, he was president of Delphos Little League for many years. He had coached teams from minors through city league, finishing his career coaching the Delpha Chevy Reds. Ed drove bus for sporting events, driving his kids and their teams to many of their events, being their biggest fan. He also kept score clock for St. John's High School sports teams, including girl's basketball for many years. Ed was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians, Duke Blue Devil basketball, and Notre Dame football. Ed's grandsons were the light of his life. One of his fondest memories with Gavin was taking a trip to Disney World, and while in Florida took him to his first Cleveland Indian's Spring Training, where they were able to meet Bob Feller. His fondest memory with Grady was when Ed and his magical cane played a key role in Grady winning a baby crawling contest when he was 11 months old. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Rev. Dennis Walsh officiating. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 and 8:00 p.m. on Friday January 4, 2019 at Weber Funeral Home, 1840 E. Fifth St., Delphos, where a Parish Wake Service will be held at 7:45 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Band Boosters or St. John's Athletic Boosters.
