John Hohlbein Obituary

John L. Hohlbein, 84, of Delphos, Ohio, passed away in the early morning of Monday, February 19, 2018 at Vancrest Nursing Home. He was born February 3, 1934 in Ottoville to the late Andrew and Barbara (Lehmkuhle) Hohlbein. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy (Haunhorst) Hohlbein whom he married on May 30, 1956. He is also survived by his children: Lenny Hohlbein of Fulton, KY, Mark Hohlbein (Rebecca) of Columbus, Bonnie Hohlbein of Worthington, Pete Hohlbein (Patty) of Worthington, and Paul Hohlbein (Lisa) of Anna. He was affectionately called Papa by his grandchildren: Lacy, Chloe, Lane, Chris, Aaron, Alex (Elizabeth), Allie (Michael Wenig), Ian, Adam, Kasey (Peiman Sarand), and Basima Azzad; and Great-grandchild: Clara Hohlbein. John is also survived by two brothers, Ralph Hohlbein (Barb) of Toledo, and Virgil Hohlbein (Nancy) of Ottoville. He deeply loved all his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild and he was blessed to be able to hold all of them in his arms. John and Dorothy also hosted exchange students that became family: Nicole Jongen and Susan Pollmeier. He was preceded in death by grandchildren: Emily, Ashley, and Kyler Hohlbein; siblings: Alma Schnipke (Otto), Eugene Hohlbein (Catherine), and Oscar Hohlbein (Annie and Sarah); In-laws: Al Hilvers, Alice and Barney Dermer, and Joann Hohlbein. John attended Ottoville Schools and was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, and The Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was an assistant Scout Master with Landeck Troop 20 with Jim Illig, where he made a lasting positive impact on the lives of many young men. He worked for Fischer Implement and was a mechanic and school bus driver for 40 years. He was in charge of keeping all 16 school buses running for Delphos City Schools, retiring from there after 40 years. John received several honors for his exemplary safety maintenance record with the buses. After retirement from the schools, he drove dump trucks for Ulm Construction and B&K Trucking, retiring from truck driving at 80 years old. He and Dorothy enjoyed traveling frequently to see their kids, grandkids, exchange students (in The Netherlands and Germany) and more recently, their first great-grandchild. He loved a good joke and teasing, but he would give you the shirt off his back if anyone ever needed anything. He was a gifted mechanic, loved helping people, a dedicated Relay for Life team member, and MS Walk team member and supporter. With this in mind, in lieu of flowers, we encourage you to make a donation to your favorite charity in his name. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Rev. Doug Taylor officiating.
