Elmer J. Helmkamp, 88, of Fort Wayne, Indiana and formerly of Delphos, passed away Thursday morning, October 12, 2017 at his home. His Family.... He was born February 2, 1929 in Delphos to Fredrick P. and Emma (Nomina) Helmkamp. On October 2, 1954 he married Ann M. (Kolkmeyer) Helmkamp. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ann Helmkamp of Fort Wayne, Indiana; his children, Barb Hammond of Tecumseh, Michigan, Kimberly (Luke) Bohn of Delphos, Mark (Allison) Helmkamp of Okinawa, Japan, Jill Furst of Hilliard and Scott (Lucinda) Helmkamp of Scottsdale, Arizona; six grandchildren, Jayme (Bubba) Weyersberg, Chelle (Eric) Zerka, Marisa Bohn, Nicole Furst, Kayla Helmkamp and Abigail Helmkamp; and a great-grandson, Luka Osborn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fredrick P. and Emma Helmkamp; and siblings, Alice Scherger and Rita Billstone. His Legacy.... Elmer retired to his lake home on Lake George, Indiana and his home in Naples, Florida, after 48 years of being a Funeral Director. He was the owner of Kolkmeyer-Helmkamp Funeral Home in Delphos and Ottoville, and retired from Siferd Funeral Home. In 1955 he took over the legacy of his father and uncle's business, Helmkamp's Meat Market, owning it for 13 years. He was a 1947 graduate of Delphos St. John's, earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Dayton and graduated from Embalming School. Elmer served as Corporal in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1362, being a 4th Degree Knight and Past Navigator. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Elks in Angola, The American Legion, Lake George Sailing Club and Conservancy and Lake George Euchre Club. He was a past member of Royal Palm Country Club in Naples. He was a former chairman of the board of directors of The Commercial Bank in Delphos and had been on the St. John's Cemetery Board. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Ft. Wayne and St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos. His Farewell Services.... Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 16 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Rev. Dennis Walsh officiating with Deacon Larry Schimmoeller assisting. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery with military honors conducted by Delphos Veterans Council. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. the day of the service at the church.
